Dr. Craigan L. Gray became director of the state's Division of Medical Assistance on April 27. Prior to joining the state, Dr.
Gray served as vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at Bon Secours Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland, Ky.
Gray was chairman and managing director of Employee Benefit Trust in Asheville from 1995-2002, and was a doctor at Mission Hospital in Asheville. In 1975, he co-founded and was the senior managing physician of Asheville Women's Medical Center.

North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman David Young announced the addition of Justice Henry Frye to the marquee of the Party’s Sanford Hunt Dinner.
The annual event, now in its fourth year, will now be known as the Sanford Hunt Frye Dinner to honor and recognize Justice Frye’s outstanding leadership, public service, and dedication to improving the lives of all North Carolinians.
“I’m proud to add Justice Frye’s name to this event,” said Gov. Jim Hunt. “It is a privilege for me to share this recognition with two great men like Justice Henry Frye and Gov. Terry Sanford. Their service shone as a bright light into the dark corners of our society and stood as a beacon to all those who wanted to improve our communities.”
This year’s dinner will be held on Saturday, August 29 in conjunction with the NCDP’s State Executive Committee meeting in Charlotte, with special guests Governor Bev Purdue, Governor Jim Hunt, and Chief Justice Frye.
“It is a significant honor for Justice Frye to be recognized in this way,” said Rep. Mickey Michaux, D-Durham. “His service to the Party and his dedication to helping people in the community make him a tremendous role model and someone we can all look up to.”
About Justice Frye
Born in Richmond County in 1932, Frye grew up in the farming community of Ellerbe. He earned his undergraduate degree at North Carolina A & T University in Greensboro and his law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. He also served in the U.S. Air Force as a munitions officer stationed in Japan and Korea and later as a Judge Advocate General Area Representative with the Air Force Reserve.
Frye became in 1968 the first African-American elected to the state legislature in the 20th century. Serving in the House from 1969 to 1980 and in the Senate from 1981 to 1982, Frye introduced legislation banning literacy tests as a requirement for voter registration.
He continued his efforts to expand opportunities for African-Americans in business and public service by co-founding the Greensboro National Bank, the Legislative Black Caucus, and the Caucus’ scholarship foundation.
Frye was appointed as an associate justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court by Gov. Hunt in 1983, becoming the first African-American to serve on the court. In 1999 Justice Frye became the first African-American to hold the highest post in the Court, serving as its Chief Justice until 2001. He is currently an attorney at Brooks Pierce Law Firm in Greensboro.
“I’m not an attorney, but if I was I’d want to be just like him,” said Rep. Alma Adams, D-Guilford and chairwoman of the Legislative Black Caucus. “Henry Frye is a trailblazer for all of us who have chosen to run and serve. He represented us in the legislative and judicial branches. He’s done a tremendous job.”
The Sanford Hunt Frye Dinner is one of the most popular NCDP events, with more than 500 people attending each year to listen to tributes to the statesmen who have inspired generations of Democrats to use their lives to serve others in their communities.

All SEANC and community members are invited to attend a town hall meeting in your area over the next three weeks to share your health care concerns and to hear local experts discuss the dire need for health insurance reform. SEANC also invited local congressmen, on a break from duties in Washington D.C., to join the town hall events.
“State employees are concerned about health care. Many of them can’t afford to cover their spouses or children on the State Health Plan, adding to the growing number of uninsured North Carolinians,” said SEANC Executive Director Dana Cope.
Last year, SEANC’s delegates voted to “support federal and state legislation to provide access to quality and affordable health care for all U.S. citizens,” as part of SEANC’s Top Ten Policy Platform Objectives. To that end, SEANC supports a public health care option, which will expand affordability and choice for the uninsured. Members will share their personal stories with members of Congress, either in person or by letter following the town hall meetings.

This year we commemorate the first September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. The tragic events of September 11, 2001 inspired Americans to come together in a remarkable spirit of unity and compassion. This year, on September 11, the President, the Corporation for National and Community Service, MyGoodDeed and the 9/11 families will ask all Americans to remember that Tuesday eight years ago and recommit to service in their communities throughout the year. The League of Women Voters of Wake County is cosponsoring a Board of Education Candidate Forum on Wednesday, September 16th from 7-9 PM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church located at 2723 Clark Avenue, Raleigh (corner of Clark and Brooks Avenues). The Forum coincides with the League's fall general meeting. Cosponsors are the Junior League of Raleigh, the YWCA of the Greater Triangle, the Wake County PTA Council and El Pueblo.

About William Lawrence Jr.:
Pediatrician William Lawrence Jr. was honored Aug. 22 with the 2009 Outstanding Service Award bestowed upon him by The North Carolina Pediatric Society at its 2009 annual meeting.
The society recognized him for outstanding service during his tenure at the N.C. Division of Medical Assistance from 2004-2008. During that time, Lawrence served in several roles including deputy director of clinical affairs, senior deputy director, and acting director of the division until late 2008. Wilson said that Medicaid is arguably one of state government's toughest job assignments. Lawrence received high marks from legislators, state officials and lobbyists during the 2008 session of the General Assembly for guiding the Medicaid program through the budget process.
Lawrence completed his undergraduate studies at UNC Chapel Hill and is a graduate of Wake Forest University's Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He completed his internship and pediatric residency at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He has held faculty positions at several medical schools and worked at Aegis Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Lawrence grew up in Durham where he attended Hillside High School and late graduated from the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. William and Queen Lawrence of Durham. His sister, Lori, is an assistant principal at Lexington (N.C.) High School.
Democratic Women of Wake County will hold their monthly luncheon meeting on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street.
