The Wake County Progressive Democrats proudly invite the public to a special screening of “Good Night, Good Luck” to be held in the Rialto Theater on Saturday, November 5th at 11:30am. The film dramatically relives Edward R. Murrow's legendary on-air confrontations with Senator Joseph McCarthy and the opposition he and his colleagues faced along the way. The cost of admission will be $10 with proceeds to support progressive candidates and causes that affect Wake County.

The Wake County Progressive Democrats believe in the absolute necessity for an uncensored and accountable press. We feel that especially since September 11th, our nation’s mainstream press has suffered from internal censorship by their corporate owners, a lack of journalistic courage, or both. As part of our goal to promote progressive ideas, we feel an obligation to remind our fellow citizens of this nation’s history with political censorship and the importance of speaking truth to power.

Film info can be found at http://wip.warnerbros.com/goodnightgoodluck. For more information on this event, please contact PJ Puryear, President of the Wake County Progressive Democrats at (919) 412-5920.

Announcing Camp Wellstone North Carolina!

Camp Wellstone is coming to the Raleigh/Durham area on November 11-13. Camp Wellstone is for anyone interested in:

*Learning new strategies to win on issues
*Helping elect progressive candidates
*Building your leadership and the leadership of others

Camp Wellstone is a dynamic weekend-long training program that teaches progressives how to win on issues and elect good candidates. We use a distinctive approach to politics, based on Paul Wellstone's success at integrating grassroots organizing, electoral organizing, progressive public policy and ethical leadership. Camp Wellstone will begin at 3:00 pm on Friday and run until about 4:00 pm on Sunday.

Camp Wellstone is for anyone interested in gaining valuable skills in effective political action: candidates and those considering a run for office, volunteer and paid campaign workers, and citizen activists involved in community or issue organizing. The program is fast-paced and highly interactive. Sessions are led by grassroots organizers and campaign professionals from across the United States and the local community.

Participants can choose from one of three tracks:

1. Being a Candidate: How to Run and Win the Wellstone Way
This track covers the fundamentals of grassroots political campaigns, successful fundraising, field organizing, budgeting, planning, volunteer coordination, get-out-the-vote and media relations. It focuses on ethical leadership and standing up for a set of values, and is designed to help participants to run and win successful campaigns. We recommend this track for individuals who are now, or who are interested in becoming, candidates for political office.

2. Working on a Campaign: Tools and Tactics for Success
This track also covers the fundamentals of grassroots political campaigns, successful fundraising, field organizing, budgeting, planning, volunteer coordination, get-out-the-vote and media relations from the perspective do those who make it happen. Participants learn the skills that are essential to putting your candidate or local team in the best position to win. We recommend this track for individuals who would like to work in a paid or volunteer capacity in political campaigns.

3. Citizen Activism, Advocacy and Organizing
This track presents ideas, strategies and tactics to strengthen issue-based organizing, as well as to develop the capacity of grassroots leaders. It gives citizen activists the skills to plan and implement successful campaigns, develop a message, build the base, work with volunteers, advocate within legislative bodies and build sustainable organizations. We recommend this for track for individuals who want to more strategically move their issues forward.

The cost is $75 or just $35 for students, low-income, or unemployed participants. If you have questions about the training, contact Sultan Shakir: sultan@grassrootssolutions.com or 202-546-6752.

On November 15th thousands of Democrats will experience our 50-state strategy up close and in person.

In many places there are vitally important elections in just a few weeks -- but we cannot afford to stop organizing and stop building after Election Day 2005. Next year’s elections will be a national referendum on the Republican culture of corruption in Washington and in the states, and we cannot wait until a few months before the election to get ready -- we need to start organizing right now.

Every one of us needs to take responsibility for the Democratic organization in our neighborhoods.

So on November 15th, ordinary Americans will open up their homes to their friends and neighbors for a night of planning and action. Hosts of National Organizing Kickoff meetings will have materials to run a briefing on our party-building efforts, the political landscape in your state and opportunities to take action locally.
