Candidate Statement:

When voters see my name on the ballot, I want you to remember that I have been fighting for you my entire life. I grew up right here in this district. I attended a segregated elementary school in this district and went on to graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill. I represented this district for over 2 decades at the local, state, and Congressional level.

I know what it means to be from North Carolina. I know the strain that this Administration has caused and the pain the North Carolina General Assembly has caused because I've lived it. For decades I have been fighting against widespread efforts by Republicans to exploit our communities. I will never back down.

We are at a critical moment and we need leaders who will deliver.

I've seen firsthand how much this region has grown with flourishing immigrant communities and a robust economy that continues to support good-paying local jobs and impactful research opportunities. I've also seen how much our communities are hurting as food, housing, and healthcare costs continue to rise while thousands of federal jobs are being cut from our district. My depth of experience as a legislator, and lived experience within our community makes me an effective legislator in delivering progressive legislation like Medicare for All and a Green New Deal and bringing home federal funding that our district expects in a Congressional representative.

Fighting Back Against Trump's Attack On Our Democracy

Donald Trump is the biggest threat to democracy our nation has ever faced. He is taking away rights, weaponizing the government against his enemies, lining his own pockets, and no one is holding him accountable. I have signed on to nine amicus briefs challenging Trump's policies in court, supported impeachment legislation, exposed his illegal access to confidential data, and boycotted his joint address to Congress. I will continue to fight to hold Trump responsible and do everything in my power to stop Trump's attack on our democracy.

Protecting Our Community From ICE

The deployment of ICE in our community is a deliberate effort by the Trump Administration to target Black, Brown, and immigrant residents. I have introduced legislation to prevent local law enforcement from collaborating with ICE and co-sponsored bills that would ban ICE agents from wearing masks and crack down on agents who violate people's rights. I have also introduced Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Kristi Noem and voted for defunding ICE.

Defending Healthcare

I believe healthcare is a universal right. In the State Senate, I helped expand Medicaid. In Congress, I am fighting to defend it from Republican cuts. The Republican Big, Ugly Bill caused healthcare costs to skyrocket for millions of Americans. The House Democrats' bill to extend the ACA tax credits passed the House but now the Senate needs to get this legislation to the President's desk immediately. I am a strong supporter of Medicare for All and I am working to stop pharmaceutical companies from price-gouging on lifesaving medications.
