WCDP Election Central – Candidate Information

Candidate Statement:
Allison is a proud Raleigh native, and has always called North Carolina her home.
Born at the "old Rex Hospital," Allison spent most of her childhood in Raleigh, graduating from Broughton High School. It was at Broughton where Allison first felt called to the stage and began to dream of a career on Broadway. That dream took her to the University of South Carolina where she received her BA in Theatre and Speech. From there it was off to New York City where Allison was able to 'live her dream' as a stage manager for a number of theatrical companies. During this time Allison began to notice the difficulties and inequities that people with disabilities faced in gaining employment, and she found a new calling.
Allison left the bright lights of Broadway and took a job with the Young Adult Institute in Brooklyn, working as a community rehabilitation specialist, helping individuals with disabilities to be strong participating members of their communities.
This new career led her back home to North Carolina, where she went to work for The ARC of NC and later Columbus Industries in southeast NC. In both places she continued working with people with disabilities assisting them in finding gainful employment in the community.
She moved back to Raleigh full-time in 2003 to be closer to family, working in a local law firm.
Direct Quote:
I believe that we need to put our government back in the hands of the people. I represent you because I know that we can make North Carolina better.
Issues:
A Fair Economy for All
We need an economy that promotes sustainable development and jobs that provide a living wage. For 15 years I worked directly with local businesses to find fair employment for people with disabilities. As a stage manager, I auditioned actors and supervised a cast and crew of diverse people. I understand what it means to cut a paycheck and to help others earn one as well. As your state representative in the General Assembly, I want to expand opportunity for all job-seekers and for businesses who rely on the Triangle's immense and diverse talent pool to meet their needs.
Social Justice & Equality
I believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every North Carolinian. Our laws should promote equality and justice regardless of who we are or who we love. I will also fight to add sexual orientation and gender expression to the classes protected under North Carolina's Civil Rights Statute.
Our Environment
As a lifelong environmentalist and native North Carolinian, I strongly believe that North Carolina's natural resources belong to all of us. We need conservation and protections to safeguard our common environmental heritage. I promise to hold polluters accountable when they threaten our air, water, and land.
