WCDP Election Central – Candidate Information

Candidate Statement:
Gale grew up in a small textile town in southwest rural Virginia, attended public school, and was the first member of her family to attend college. She knows the value of hard work and the opportunities that come from education.
Gale has been president of the NC Nurses Association, chair of the NC Center for Nursing, chair of the NC Council of Nurse Practitioners, and a member of the NC Board of Nursing. She was Chief Health Officer at software company SAS for 26 years before leaving clinical practice in late 2020 to focus fulltime on legislative and advocacy work.
After serving on the Cary Town Council from 2007-2014, and in the NC House from 2015-2022, Gale was elected to the state Senate, beginning her first term in 2023. She is the first advanced practice registered nurse elected to the NC legislature, and the first nurse to serve in the state Senate. She is known as a commonsense legislator who works effectively across the aisle.
Gale and her husband Kevin live in Cary and have 2 adult sons.
Direct Quote:
I believe in the greatness, resourcefulness, and resiliency of this state and its people. I ran in 2014 pledging to spurn partisanship and put my energies into fighting the right battles: for vibrant public schools, a healthy environment, and a robust economy.
Issues:
Strengthening Our Economy
Growing our economy requires investing in our current and future workforce through appropriate education, support for small and large businesses, and strategic recruitment of new companies and industries. When it comes to innovation and research, North Carolina is a leader in the South. We need to build on this rich history by preparing citizens for good-paying, highly-skilled jobs. Quality education, attractive communities, and infrastructure investments attract new businesses and good jobs to our state.
Ensuring Access to Quality Health Care
As a nurse practitioner of almost 40 years, I believe everyone deserves access to healthcare. There are two sides to the healthcare access coin: insurance coverage to help pay for care and an adequate supply, mix, and distribution of healthcare professionals to deliver that care. As a nurse practitioner and former healthcare administrator, I fought for Medicaid expansion from the moment I arrived as a freshman legislator in 2015, and I was delighted to vote for it in early 2023. This healthcare coverage for 700,000 previously uninsured working adults is a lifeline for them and critical for hospitals overburdened with uncompensated care that threatens their ability to remain employment center
Investing in Public Education
Education is the key to individual, family, business, and community prosperity and core to a thriving state economy. To ensure innovation and opportunity in the future, we must never lose sight of the need to invest today in all levels of education: pre-K, K-12, the community college system, and our public university system. This means recruiting and retaining the best possible educators, keeping schools structurally and technologically up-to-date, and making higher education affordable.
