WCDP Election Central – Candidate Information

Candidate Statement:
I ran for the NC House in 2018 because of my passion for North Carolina public schools. I have been involved in the public schools in Wake County and North Carolina for the past ten years as a Parent Teacher Association leader at the school, county, and state level. I served as the Wake County PTA Council President and as the State Advocacy Chair for North Carolina PTA, and began working as a substitute teacher in 2021. I am a former attorney who practiced law for a decade. My top priorities in the NCGA are to increase education funding so that every child in NC has access to a sound basic education, to protect our environment, and to guarantee every North Carolinian's right to reproductive freedom. I am running for my fifth term in the NC House and hope to continue my work for the constituents of District 36.
Issues:
Increasing Education Funding
North Carolina is not adequately funding our public schools, and a deliberate decision has been made by NC's Republican leadership over the last decade to cut revenue to starve our public schools. During my time at the NCGA, I have sponsored bills that encourage higher teacher pay, more money allocated to public education in the state budget, recruitment programs and bonuses to ensure that every classroom has a teacher and resources to provide students a sound education.
Addressing Climate Change
Nothing is more important than ensuring our air is safe to breathe and our water is safe to drink. That's why I am committed to working with my colleagues to pass environmental protections, and I have championed several bills this session to roll back policies that have had adverse effects on our state's ecosystems. Outside the House chamber, I have been a member of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators since I first entered office in 2019, and I was selected to be the NCEL North Carolina State Lead in 2021.
Protecting Reproductive Freedoms
I am a staunch supporter of abortion care and led our caucus fighting against SB20 in 2023. I also filed a bill that would roll back abortion restrictions in NC, the RBG Act. The bill would repeal the biased counseling requirement and 72-hour delay before someone may access abortion care; allow NPs, PAs, and CNMs to provide abortions within their scope of practice; repeal the ban on abortions provided via telemedicine; and repeal the insurance/funding bans that prohibit abortion coverage in ACA plans in NC, the state employee health plan, local government employee health plans, and Medicaid.
