Candidate Statement:

Hello, my name is Ya Liu, and I'm excited to be running for reelection in the North Carolina State House in District 21. As a House Representative, I hope to continue to make North Carolina a better state for everyone. In 2003, I moved to the Triangle area to pursue higher education and better opportunities. Despite arriving with no money, no connections, and limited English proficiency, I have since earned two doctoral degrees in sociology and law, published numerous articles in public health and geriatric research, worked at Duke Law School as a faculty member for almost a decade, and have a thriving small business. All while raising three beautiful children with my husband in Cary, the diverse and welcoming community we call home.

Previously, I have served on the Cary Town Council for District D, which has been a valuable experience for seeing our challenges. Being a Town Councilwoman has taught me how to serve a wonderful community, build strong relationships with colleagues, and represent your opinions and concerns.

I am honored to be a strong advocate for business prosperity, careful infrastructure growth, public transit, senior services, and environmentally friendly policies. As your representative in the General Assembly, I will continue to fight for improved schools, better healthcare, a stronger economy, cleaner environments, and even more policies that will improve the lives of working families to prepare our state for the future.

Protecting our environment must be one of our state's top priorities. Climate change has already begun to harm our coasts and agricultural industries, and projections suggest that this is just the beginning if we do not take bold action. I have been a strong advocate for the environmental initiatives and policies on the Cary Town Council.
