WCDP Election Central – Candidate Information

Candidate Statement:
Kimberly McGhee is a community leader, business owner, former educator, former radio host of The Lounge, and co-host of the digital show LOVE & Flow. She currently serves as Program Manager for a nonprofit supporting single mothers pursuing education and career stability. For years, she has worked directly with families, seniors, and working residents across Wake County-helping people navigate housing challenges, workforce training, childcare needs, and access to opportunity.
Kimberly is running for Wake County Commissioner At-Large to ensure county decisions reflect the real experiences of residents in every ZIP code. Her priorities include expanding affordable housing options, strengthening workforce pipelines, supporting small businesses, investing in youth and senior services, and ensuring county growth benefits both urban and rural communities.
She believes county government works best when departments do not operate in silos. Kimberly will work to break down functional, technical, and cultural barriers across agencies by promoting targeted collaboration, coordinated budgeting, and stronger cross-department training.
Direct Quote:
I'm a learn-it-all leader, not a know-it-all politician. My focus is to listen, learn, and lead - so Wake County becomes stronger, more connected, and a model for the state.
Issues:
Cross-District Collaboration
I will work with commissioners across all seven districts to understand each area's needs and align county funding accordingly. By coordinating efforts in transportation, attainable housing, education, and health and human services, we can reduce duplication, use resources more efficiently, and ensure investments reflect real community priorities. My goal is a countywide approach that benefits all seven districts and leaves no community behind.
Supporting Sustainable Funding for Nonprofit Organizations
Partnering with Nonprofits to Deliver Results for Wake County Residents
Nonprofits are essential partners in meeting community needs, often reaching families faster and more effectively than government alone. I support transparent, accountable funding partnerships that strengthen services in housing, workforce development, food access, childcare, and mental health. By aligning county investments with proven nonprofit outcomes, we can expand impact, avoid duplication, and ensure public dollars support programs that truly improve residents' lives.
Smart Growth & Responsible Budgeting
Budgeting and Development for Plan Wake and the UDO
I support aligning county budgets with Plan Wake and the Unified Development Ordinance to guide responsible growth. This means investing in infrastructure, affordable housing, transportation, and environmental protections, while ensuring that development decisions reflect community input. By aligning planning policy with budget priorities, we can manage growth, protect the quality of life, and ensure Wake County develops in ways that benefit both current residents and future generations in education and entrepreneurship.
