WCDP Election Central – Candidate Information
Josh Stein
NC Governor
Candidate Statement:
Attorney General Josh Stein learned early on that some things are worth fighting for, no matter the opposition. His parents grounded him in our shared values of freedom, justice, and opportunity for everyone, and his faith teaches him that we are all children of God and we are called to make a difference. That’s why as Attorney General and as a state Senator before, Josh has taken on powerful special interests to protect families. Josh and his team have worked hard to keep families safe, hold corporate wrongdoers accountable, make polluters pay to clean up the messes they make, and defend your reproductive and voting rights.
Importance of this Race:
North Carolinians deserve a government that works for them. The Republican supermajority in our General Assembly has gerrymandered districts so they can cling to power. They seek to control the executive branch by passing unconstitutional power grabs and have made the courts partisan, given themselves the power to appoint judges, and written themselves out of our state’s public records law, avoiding transparency and public accountability. Our choice on Election Day is between Josh Stein, someone with experience, compassion, and leadership skills, who is dedicated to the people of North Carolina, and Robinson, someone with very little experience, a lack of accountability, and history of divisive, partisan, extremist views. As our next governor, Josh Stein will fight corruption and ensure leaders are working in the best interest of all of the people in North Carolina.
Office Responsibilities:
- The Governor recommends to the General Assembly (GA) a comprehensive budget of the anticipated revenue and proposed expenditures of the State for the ensuing fiscal period.
- The budget enacted by the GA is administered by the Governor.
- The Governor will take care that the laws are faithfully executed.
- Has veto power over legislation passed by the GA, though the GOP currently holds a super-majority, allowing them to override the Governor’s veto.
- The Governor is the Commander in Chief of the military forces of the State except when they are called into the service of the United States.
Issues:
Creating a Strong Economy for Everyone:
North Carolina’s economy is strong and growing, but not everyone is benefiting from that growth. The current cost of housing, groceries, medicine and other basic needs is making life too expensive for too many families. As your Governor, Josh Stein will keep working to deliver economic security and peace of mind by lowering costs, raising the minimum wage, and cutting taxes for working families. Instead of waging job-killing culture wars that divide us, he will keep fighting to invest in our state and all our people.
Protecting Our Fundamental Rights:
Every North Carolinian deserves the freedom to vote, to make their own health care decisions, and to live their lives free from discrimination. Josh Stein believes that hate and bigotry have no place in our state. As Attorney General, he has fought to protect all NC residents from discrimination, including fighting against voter suppression, restrictions on reproductive freedoms, and attacks against LGBTQ+ North Carolinians. As Governor, he will continue to oppose those who would divide us and work for a more united North Carolina that works for all of us.
Ensuring Our Communities Are Safe:
As North Carolina’s chief law enforcement officer since 2017, keeping people safe has been Josh Stein’s top priority. He worked with both Republicans and Democrats in the legislature to strengthen our laws to protect NC kids from sex crimes. He also partnered with the legislature to eliminate the nations largest backlog of untested rape kits, finally delivering justice to survivors and putting rapists behind bars. In addition to prosecuting drug traffickers, he continues to work on a bi-partisan basis to tackle the fentanyl crisis. As Attorney General he has worked with law enforcement leaders to identify strategies to recruit and retain more officers who will take on this important work. Building safe communities will continue to be a priority for him as our next governor.
